In Easter 1996, while the Townsville church was enjoying great growth, Pastor Muller received a
dream from God about moving to Fernvale, a place he hadn’t even heard of. After having received many confirmations
about the move and after a couple of trips to the town, in December 1996, the Mullers bought their residential
house in Knox Road, Fernvale and started a church there.
Greg had the privilege of meeting one of two men who had being praying over Fernvale for some
years. They often came out on a Friday night and spent time praying for God to move in Fernvale and the surrounding
area. They felt led by God to pray this way and were delighted that God had specifically called Greg to this
ministry.
In May 1997, Pastor Muller issued an invitation to local business people for a free dinner at
Cormorant Bay Restaurant, at the Wivenhoe Dam picnic grounds. It was a motivational time regarding their businesses
and an opportunity to share the dream about the reasons for his family coming to Fernvale.
A small home group was started midway through 1997 and twelve months later, by January 1998,
there were ten people attending church. In September 1997 an Alpha Course was conducted and by 1999 church
attendance had doubled to 20. By 2000 it reached 40 and in that year the church moved to Fernvale Community Hall in
Banks Creek Road
Fernvale Community Church started as a church plant. It has always had a contemporary,
charismatic flavour coming out of Pastor Muller’s desire to see a Holy Spirit led expression of New Testament
Christianity in the local church. Fernvale Community Church officially became part of Churches of Christ in
Queensland in 2001.
The church has met in the Hall since 2000 and by 2002 there were 96 attendees, with about 75
attending each week. From 2004 until 2007 numbers declined to about 30. At the end of 2008 there are now 60
attendees, with an average weekly attendance of 40. A new season of growth is taking place.
A youth group was started in 1998, successfully led by Pastor Muller and David Kickbusch and for
the last few years has been led by a small but dedicated team of young adult church members. The youth group,
called Fernvale Youth Ministry (FYM) meets weekly on Fridays, mostly at the Hall, but sometimes activities such as
bowling, skating and movie nights are held. From time to time the group also participates in organised Christian
events such as "Youth Alive", "Planetshakers", "Easter Fest" and "Keswick Convention" in Chinchilla.
After conducting "Kids Games" (a Scripture Union initiative) at the Hall in September 2003, a
Kids Club for primary school children in the community was started and continues to meet on Fridays. A varied
programme incorporating such things as games, craft, Bible stories, Bible activities, songs, drama and an evening
meal each week has contributed to the success of the ministry.
A ministry called "Gleaners" (officially Gleaners Fellowship Inc.) was started in early 2002, in
a rented house at 1454 Brisbane Valley Highway, Fernvale. Gleaners was founded at Goodna by Phil & Doreen
Wheeler-Wylie around 1997, with a vision of offering reduced-price grocery items to the general public, and with a
view of the church connecting with the broader community. Fernvale Gleaners is one of four Gleaners outlets
operating presently. Over the years, Alpha Courses have been run at the house and other ministries are about to be
launched by the church under the Gleaners umbrella. The name "Gleaners" is derived from the Israelite practice of
gleaning as instructed by the LORD to Moses (see Leviticus 23:22).
Another ministry of the church was started at the Fernvale After Care Centre in Clive Street, a
private care facility for the mentally challenged. A weekly mini-service was started by ladies in the church and a
number of residents are transported by other church members each week to Sunday services, as well as to
Gleaners.
Each one of these ministries has produced fruit for the Kingdom of God. Primary school-aged
children through to mature-aged people have been saved. Many baptisms over the years have been conducted in the
Brisbane River at Twin Bridges, Savages Crossing, and church members’ backyard pools. It has been exciting to see
such a wide range of people’s lives absolutely impacted by the gospel.

Fernvale Community Church, as the name indicates, is community-oriented and seeks to be a
positive influence in the local and wider community, as well as being a place of fellowship, ministry and growth
for those following Christ.
